Canberra is surprising with the amount of wildlife that lives around the edges of its housing estates. The town planners left a lattice of natural bush in between many suburbs and the locals have embraced this with a passion. There are numerous Friends of (a particular reserve) groups such as Friends of Black Mountain and other less well known reserves who tend to their preferred park with much TLC. The animals thrive in these bushland oases due to the authenticity of the native habitat.
